What’s the Best Gluten Free Bread to Use to Make French Toast?

So you might be tempted to swap another gluten free bread brand for the Canyon Bakehouse that this recipe calls for. Obviously, you are welcome to test out your favorite brand but I found that Canyon Bakehouse gives the best results! I tried making this recipe with Aldi’s gluten free bread and it was way too mushy. The Canyon Bakehouse bread is the perfect texture that allows the outside to get that perfect golden brown while the inside is still light and fluffy.

How to Make Gluten Free French Toast

Spray the electric griddle and set the heat to 250 degrees. Place the eggs in a medium sized bowl and whisk together. Add in the vanilla extract, cinnamon and coconut milk and whisk until combined.

Add one piece of bread to the mixture and hold it in the mixture (completely covered) for 5 seconds. Flip the bread over and hold it in the mixture for another 5 seconds. Place the bread on the griddle and repeat for the remaining 9 pieces of bread. Turn the heat down to 200 degrees and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side.

If you don’t have an electric griddle, you can make this recipe on a square griddle pan on the stovetop. Follow the directions above but heat the stove to medium high heat then reduce to medium heat once the French toast is on the griddle. Check the French toast often as each stove is different and it might cook quicker than the 3-4 minutes.

Directions

  • Spray the electric griddle with nonstick cooking oil and set the heat to 250 degrees. If you don’t have a griddle see the note below. Place the eggs in a medium sized bowl and whisk together. Add in the vanilla extract, cinnamon and coconut milk and whisk until combined.
  • Add one piece of bread to the mixture and hold it in the mixture (completely covered) for 5 seconds. Flip the bread over and hold it in the mixture for another 5 seconds. Place the bread on the griddle and repeat for the remaining 7 pieces of bread. Turn the heat down to 200 degrees and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side.

Notes

  • If you don’t have an electric griddle, you can make this recipe on a square griddle pan on the stovetop. Follow the directions below but heat the stove to medium high heat then reduce to medium heat once the French toast is on the griddle. Check the French toast often as each stove is different and it might cook quicker than the 3-4 minutes.
  • You may need to sprinkle a little extra cinnamon into the mixture about halfway through coating the bread. Sometimes the cinnamon likes to float on the top of the mixture, so it gets on the first few pieces of bread leaving less for the rest. Simply sprinkle some more cinnamon into the bowl and stir together before coating the remaining pieces of bread.
