Gluten Free & Dairy Free Charcuterie Board

I love snacking. I love it so much that I could easily snack all day and accidently skip meals. That’s why I am obsessed with the idea of a charcuterie board. It’s basically a big cutting board filled with all the snacks. When I made my first charcuterie board, I was a little bit intimidated. I don’t know about you, but when you Google charcuterie boards you are bombarded with the most beautiful designs. The good news is that you don’t need special qualifications to make a charcuterie board. You just need your favorite snacks. The even better news is that you can make this delicious appetizer with gluten and dairy free ingredients!

What is a Charcuterie Board?

A charcuterie is simply an arrangement of meats, cheese and other snack like foods on a board. It can be as simple or fancy as you would like. The size can vary as well, from small cutting boards to an entire table. Charcuterie boards make great appetizers at gatherings because there is something for everyone!

How to Build A Charcuterie Board

I am not an expert at creating charcuterie boards but that’s why I wanted to share this one with you all. There are many suggestions on how to build the perfect charcuterie board. But, in my personal opinion, the thing that matters most is what YOU want to add and what you and your guests will enjoy the most! With that being said, here are my simple tips for how to build a charcuterie board…

  • Think about including ingredients that are salty, savory, sweet and spicy!
  • Include ingredients that pair well together. For example, if you have meat and cheese you can include a cracker that would pair well with that. Or if you have a dip, make sure you have at least one ingredient that can be dipped in it.
  • Add a few bowls to your charcuterie board that include dips.
  • Think about adding ingredients from different food groups (meat, cheese, fruit, veggies, crackers, etc).
  • HAVE FUN…this is the most important tip I have for you! Be creative and don’t worry about designing the perfect board.

How to Make Charcuterie Board

To make a charcuterie board, you will need a cutting board or sheet pan. I like to start with adding the dips. To make the buffalo chicken dip, combine the canned chicken, mayo and hot sauce. I don’t use measurements for this recipe because the best results come from taste preference. Add a spoon of mayo and a 1/2 teaspoon of hot sauce to the chicken and then continue to add more until it tastes right to you. If are the type of person who needs more of a concrete recipe, you can check out this one here from Alanna’s Kitchen. This recipe is more of a traditional buffalo chicken dip and includes exact measurements. Place the buffalo chicken dip and queso into serving bowls and arrange on separate sides of the cutting board.

Roll up the ham and cut the provolone cheese into bite sized pieces. Add the ham, cheese and pepperoni to the board. I like to keep these in the same area of the cutting board. Next, add the crackers, chips and pretzels to the board. I like to keep them by the queso and chicken buffalo dip when arranging them. Cut the celery and add it to the board with the carrots. Wash the fruits and cut the apple into thin pieces. Add the apple slices, grapes and blueberries to the board and fill in the remaining spaces. Break the chocolate bar into pieces and add to the board.

Note: this is just a general road map of how I designed my charcuterie board. You can follow these steps or simply start with a blank slate and add the ingredients in any way you would like! I truly believe there is no “right” way when it comes to creating a charcuterie board.

Notes

  • The instructions for creating this board is based off of the ingredients I used but is only a template. The best part about making a charcuterie board is that you can get creative!
  • The serving size is an estimate because this is more of a snacky dish. The pictures shown of my charcuterie board holds 1/2 of the ingredients listed here. The good thing about the ingredients, is they can be easily stored if you don’t use all of them!
