Why You Need this Recipe in Your Life
Mornings are busy enough without worrying about breakfast. That’s why this Five Minute Breakfast Bowl is the perfect addition to your morning routine. A big bowl of warm, creamy buckwheat that has a hint of vanilla flavoring and then topped with fresh fruit, nuts, cacao nibs or anything else you are in the mood for! In my personal opinion, a gluten free breakfast that’s ready in just five minutes without sacrificing any flavor is always a win. But in case you don’t want to take my word for it, give this recipe a try. It just might become a staple in your household like it is mine. It also makes a great alternative to oatmeal when you are craving a warm, cozy breakfast that will keep you full!
What Is Buckwheat?
Buckwheat is a fruit seed that is often referred to as a superfood. It is rich in fiber, protein, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. As a result, there are many health benefits eating buckwheat. Some of these include reducing blood sugar, improving heart health, lowering cholesterol, and improving digestion.
I want to mention that buckwheat is not the same texture as oatmeal. Buckwheat has more of a porridge texture that is thicker and creamier than oatmeal. Now, don’t let that scare you away because it is just as delicious. I find it to be a perfect replacement for oatmeal but I like to give the warning that the textures are definitely different.
Is Buckwheat Gluten Free?
I had a period where I was avoiding eggs and oatmeal while I was working on healing my gut. During this time, I always struggled with coming up with what to eat for breakfast. I saw buckwheat in the grocery store but avoided it since I automatically thought it contained wheat due to its name. It wasn’t until I saw a gluten free blogger post a recipe containing buckwheat that I did more research. Even though wheat is in the name, buckwheat is actually gluten free! As always, just make sure to check the ingredients to confirm nothing else is added or that there isn’t any cross contamination risk on product lines.

How to Make Five Minute Breakfast Bowl
- Start by mixing together the cream of buckwheat, water, vanilla extract and maple syrup in a microwave safe bowl.
- Place the bowl in the microwave and cook for three minutes. The syrup likes to cook in one spot so you will want to mix it together once it is finished cooking.
- Let the buckwheat cool to your preferred temperature and add your toppings. My favorite toppings are blueberries, strawberries, sunflower seeds, almond butter and cacao nibs.
Commonly Asked Questions
Can you reheat this buckwheat breakfast bowl?
I would recommend making this breakfast bowl when you are ready to eat it. Due to the texture of the cream of buckwheat, it does not reheat well. I definitely wouldn’t meal prep this one for the week. I always make it and then eat it right away.
Can you make this recipe ahead of time?
I would not recommend making the full recipe ahead of time. If you are desperate for time or want to take it with you to work, you could mix together the water, vanilla extract and maple syrup ahead of time then simply add that to the buckwheat and microwave it.
What is the consistency of cream of buckwheat?
I have heard people say that cream of buckwheat is a good replacement for oatmeal. I definitely agree with this. With that being said, it definitely has a different texture and consistency than oatmeal. Cream of buckwheat has more of a porridge consistency than oatmeal does. I don’t mind the texture and actually enjoy it but it’s good to know what to expect if you never tried it before.
What does cream of buckwheat taste like?
Cream of buckwheat has a slight nutty, fruity flavor. Since this recipe combines the cream of buckwheat with maple syrup and vanilla, it has more of a sweet vanilla flavor.
Where to buy cream of buckwheat?
I can typically find cream of buckwheat used in this breakfast bowl at my local grocery store. However, I tend to buy it on Vitacost because it happens to cost less and it gets delivered to my doorstep. My favorite brand is Pocono Organic Cream of Buckwheat.
Is cream of buckwheat good for you?
This is such a common question and one I hesitate to answer simply because I truly believe that every body is so different. What works for me and is good for my body might not work for you or be good for your body. With that being said, buckwheat is known to be rich in fiber, protein, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Research has shown that there CAN be many health benefits to eating buckwheat. Some of these include reducing blood sugar, improving heart health, lowering cholesterol and improving digestion. As always, do research yourself, talk to your doctor if needed and listen to your body to determine if it is a food that is good for you personally.
