This is the Best Oat-Free Apple Crisp recipe and has all the flavors of the traditional recipe without the oats. Baked tender apples with a crispy sugar topping and finished with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It’s gluten free, grain free, dairy free and Paleo friendly.
My mom’s birthday was in September and I made her an apple crisp because it’s one of her favorite desserts. I couldn’t eat it because it was made with oats, as most are, and I still can’t tolerate them. Ever since, I’ve been craving apple crisp so I decided to recreate this classic recipe without the oats. The end result was better than I ever expected! The combination of baked apples, cinnamon, sugar and vanilla ice cream is truly the ultimate comfort food. This apple crisp is one of those recipes that is so cozy and warms the soul.

What are the Best Apples for Apple Crisp?
In my personal opinion, granny smith apples are the perfect taste for apple crisp. With that being said, you can definitely use any type of apple you prefer or have on hand and it will still end up tasting delicious!
How to Make the Best Oat-Free Apple Crisp
Making this apple crisp from scratch is so much easier than you might think! Follow each step below and you will have a warm, delicious apple crisp to enjoy in no time!
Step One: Prep the apples
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Peel and cut the apples into small cubes. Add the apples, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, lemon juice and maple syrup to a bowl and toss until the apples are evenly coated. Place in a 7 X 11 baking dish and set aside.
Step Two: Make the topping
Combine the coconut sugar, almond flour, arrowroot, salt and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon in a medium sized bowl. Add the ghee and use a knife to cut it into the flour mixture until small crumbs start to form. Then add in 1 Tablespoon of maple syrup and continue to use the knife creating more crumbs. Add the pecans (optional step) and gently stir together.
Step Three: Combine and bake
Sprinkle the mixture on top of the apples in the baking dish and bake for 40 minutes at 375 degrees. With 20 minutes left, remove from oven and drizzle the remaining two teaspoons of maple syrup on the crumb topping. Place back in the oven and continue to cook for 20 more minutes.
Reheating the Apple Crisp
The apple crisp can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and be reheated in the microwave. I do want to mention that this apple crisp is best when eaten fresh. Without the oats, the topping can become slightly melted when reheated in the microwave. It still tastes the same but it has less of the sugary chunks that traditional apple crisp has.
Dairy Free Ice Cream Options
In my personal opinion, you just can’t have apple crisp without a big scoop of vanilla ice cream! If you cannot tolerate dairy, you can look for dairy free ice cream. There are so many brands out there but my two favorite are (1) Coconut Bliss Madagascar Vanilla Bean (my absolute favorite) and (2) SO Delicious Dairy Free Vanilla Bean Coconut Milk. Both these brands taste delicious and have pretty good ingredients!
